There are many reasons for Whistler Blackcomb being voted year after year the best in North America. It is a mile high, has fabulous snow and does not get bone numbingly cold like the resorts of the Rockiest. Skiing here in December and January is a very good idea. Piste maintenance is the best ever.

However it is the huge variety of skiing at all levels that makes Whistler one of the top resorts in the world. Choose from the wide open cruising to wide well shaped mogul fields and then go on to top terror double diamond couloir There is a lot of skiing for everyone, including an excellent ski school.

Go up the new Peak Chair to Whistler mountain, turn left and enjoy the long gentle run around Harmony Bowl and on and on, go past the Olympic station and over 5,000 vertical feet later get to the village, a great run. The fast gondola takes you right back up.

Next time turn right, enter the west bowl. There is a hard and very hard way of doing this, ride the bumps (the best anywhere we know) then on to the recently finished direct route, cut through the forest down to Creekside, again a mile high and in our view for longest and most continuous black run you can ski, maybe any where in the world.

Worth flying a third of the way around the world. Voted top North American resort for many years. Whistler is truly world class. Unlike other inland Canadian resorts, Whistler does not experience a numbing cold which is associated with North American skiing.

Now its time for lunch at Dusty's, you will have earned that big pitch of draft beer and its not a tiny Euro lager.

OFF PISTE

The best skiing in the world, thanks to helicopters. A days heliskiing for around £300, unbeatable value. You don't have to be a top skier thanks to the modern wide ski. If you are comfortable skiing red runs then you will have the day of your life.

There are plenty of off piste variations off the Blackcomb glaciers, or go down to the Fitzsimmons Creek and then you don't need a heli ride.

THE  VILLAGE

The design and development distinguish Whistler from the typical North American resort. Its compact and full of all the services, particularly wide variety of places to eat, good bars for all styles and excellent clubs. Remember its Canada, so boys, the girls could well be asking you to dance. Eating out is terrific value from a Hamburger at around £5 to a 5 star eating in the Chateau Whistler for around£25

Above all the apres ski distinguishes this resort form most others, anywhere. You can ski right up to the Long horn or Gariboldi Bar in Whistler, or Merlins in Blackcomb. Order a pitcher of beer and enjoy live music. It just a C$5 back to the Alta Vista and you simply walk back to the Chalet Whistler
